Most window tint films are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a thermoplastic polymer that reacts predictably to heat. This material is engineered to be heat-shrinkable, which means it contracts when exposed to controlled heat, especially on the non-adhesive side.

When you apply heat to the film using a heat gun, the polyester molecules become more flexible. You then guide the film into shape using a squeegee or gloved hand. The heat allows the film to conform to the compound curves of automotive glass (especially back windows), while tension applied with tools helps smooth and shape it.
