Unfortunately, many people entering the industry (or even some established shops) are tempted to use cheap dyed films or knock-off brands because of the lower upfront cost. The truth is, cheap film will cost you more in the long run.

Here’s why bargain-basement tint should never make it onto a customer’s car:

• Fading & Turning Purple – Dyed films quickly break down under UV exposure, leaving a purple, hazy look that screams "cheap tint."

• Bubbling & Peeling – Low-end adhesives often fail after a year or two, leading to bubbles and peeling that ruin both appearance and visibility.

• No Heat Rejection – While good ceramic or carbon films block heat and infrared rays, cheap film provides almost no comfort benefit.

• No Warranty or Support – Most cheap brands don’t stand behind their products. When it fails, you’re left on your own to redo the work at your expense.

• Bad Customer Experience – Poor results hurt your business reviews and referrals. A few bad jobs can ruin your reputation in the tinting world.

How to Tell if You Have Cheap or High-Quality Film

Not sure what’s on your car (or what a supplier is trying to sell you)? Here are a few simple ways to tell:

1. Color Shift – Cheap films tend to fade or turn purple within a year or two. High-quality films maintain their color for life.

2. Heat Rejection – Step inside a car with premium ceramic tint and you’ll feel the difference instantly. Cheap film offers little to no temperature control.

3. Price Point – If the tint job was too good to be true on price, chances are the film used was low-grade. Quality film costs more because it’s built to last.

4. Warranty – Reputable brands (Llumar, XPEL, SunTek, Appeax, Maidco etc.) offer lifetime warranties against fading, peeling, or bubbling. Cheap film? None.

5. Clarity – Premium films have high optical clarity — no haziness, streaks, or distortion when looking through the glass. Cheap films often look cloudy.
