Dot matrix silvering is one of the most common problems new window tinters run into. The rear window looks great, except for the band of black dots around the edge, which turns silver and cloudy. Here's why it happens and the steps pros use to keep it to a minimum.
Why Dot Matrix Silvers
The dots are a raised ceramic band baked onto the glass. Film can't sit flat against the glass between them, so tiny pockets of air and water get trapped. Light reflecting off those pockets is what looks silver.
5 Steps to Reduce Dot Matrix Silvering
1. Clean the dots harder than the glass.
Dirt and old residue sit in the low spots between the dots. Scrub the band with a non-scratch pad and slip solution, then squeegee it clean before the film goes on.
2. Don't drown it.
Extra solution under the dots has nowhere to go. Use a light, even mist so you're not fighting water that's trapped between them.
3. Squeegee the band last, with firm, overlapping strokes.
Lay down the clear glass first. Then work the dot band from the clear area out toward the edge, overlapping each stroke so you're pushing water and air out, not just spreading it around.
4. Warm it and press again.
Lightly warm the dot area with your heat gun, keeping it moving, then go over it again with a hard card. Softer adhesive presses down into the gaps more easily.
5. Set expectations.
Some light haze over heavy dot matrix is common and may not go away completely. Tell the customer before you start so they're not surprised at pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is dot matrix on a car window?
It's the band of black ceramic dots around the edge of many rear windows and windshields. The dots are baked onto the glass and are slightly raised.
Why does window tint look silver over the dots?
Because the dots are raised, the film can't sit flat against the glass between them. Tiny pockets of air and water get trapped, and light reflecting off those pockets looks silver or cloudy.
Will dot matrix silvering go away?
Some of it may improve as the film cures, but over heavy dot matrix some haze can remain. Good cleaning, light solution, firm squeegeeing and a little heat keep it to a minimum.
Can I sand the dot matrix?
We don't recommend altering the customer's glass. Stick to cleaning and installation technique, and set expectations before you start.
Where can I learn this hands-on?
