To become a window tinter in Singapore, you need three things: hands-on installation skill, a solid understanding of LTA's tinted film rules, and a plan for running the work as a business. Tint Academy's 2-day hands-on window tint certification training comes to Singapore on December 5–6, 2026, hosted by SQUAD Workshop at Enterprise Hub. This guide explains each step.
Tint Academy has trained 6,500+ students over 10 years. The advice below is general information, not legal advice. Always check the official LTA and ACRA pages for the current rules.
Step 1: Learn the Skill Hands-On
Window tinting looks simple until you try a curved rear windscreen. Customers notice dust, creases, lifting edges and uneven gaps, so the skill has to come first. Good training teaches you a repeatable process:
- Glass preparation: cleaning so contamination does not get trapped under the film.
- Film handling and cutting: working with the film without creasing it, and cutting clean edges.
- Heat shrinking: shaping film to curved glass, which is the skill most beginners find hardest.
- Squeegee technique and finishing: removing solution and locking edges so the install cures clean.
This Tint Academy video shows heat shrinking on a rear glass using the N pattern, one of the techniques you practise in class.
Videos help, but tinting is a hands-on skill. That is why Tint Academy's courses are built around practice with an instructor beside you. The Singapore course covers professional installation techniques, film selection and performance, real-world hands-on training, and business, pricing and growth strategies, and it is run with Scorpion Window Film.
Step 2: Know Singapore's Window Tint Rules
A professional tinter needs to know the rules before touching a customer's car. Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) says tinted film must be non-reflective, must let at least 70% of light through the front windscreen and the two front side windows, and at least 25% through the rear windscreen and the two rear side windows. Film on the front windscreen must not affect signals between the In-vehicle Unit and the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry. (Source: LTA OneMotoring, Vehicle Technologies and Modifications.)
| Window | Minimum light let through (LTA) |
|---|---|
| Front windscreen and two front side windows | At least 70% |
| Rear windscreen and two rear side windows | At least 25% |
On 7 April 2026, the Ministry of Transport restated these requirements (minimum light transmission, non-reflective film and no interference with ERP signals) in a parliamentary reply, and said LTA will keep the requirements under review with the Singapore Police Force (MOT).
A few other points from LTA every installer should know:
- LTA says all modifications must be installed by qualified personnel according to the vehicle and product manufacturer's recommendations.
- Vehicle owners can send their vehicle to any LTA-Authorised Inspection Centre to test that tinted films comply.
- Tinting or masking of vehicle lamps (headlamps, stop lamps, signal lamps) is not allowed.
- LTA says illegal modifications carry penalties. For non-individuals (for example, businesses), LTA lists fines of up to $40,000 for a first offence and up to $80,000 for repeat offenders.
In practice, this makes film selection a real skill. The front of the car needs light, high-performance film, so knowing which films reject heat without going dark is valuable to customers who want a cooler cabin in Singapore's climate.
Step 3: Set Up the Business Side
If you plan to tint for profit, look at the business rules early. ACRA says you need to register a business if you carry out an activity for profit on a regular basis (unless exempted), or if you use any name other than your own full NRIC name. Start at ACRA's requirements and eligibility page, and speak to an accountant about tax.
Then think about how you will operate:
- Join or partner with an existing workshop: a common way to start, because you get a bay and steady car traffic.
- Add tint to a detailing or car-care business: customers who already trust you with their car are natural tint customers.
- Your own shop: the biggest step, which needs a suitable space and a steady flow of bookings.
Pricing is where many new tinters struggle. Tint Academy's course includes business, pricing and growth strategies, and our article How Much Does Window Tint Training Cost? explains how to think about the investment.
Step 4: Get Certified and Keep Practising
Certification shows that you completed structured, hands-on training. A Tint Academy certification is not a government licence, but it gives customers and employers confidence that you learned the process properly. Read Window Tint Certification Explained for the difference, and visit our window tint certification page to see how Tint Academy certification works.
After training, practise on as many vehicles as you can. Speed comes after consistency, so focus first on clean, repeatable installs.

FAQ: Becoming a Window Tinter in Singapore
Do you need a licence to be a window tinter in Singapore?
LTA's vehicle modification guidance does not list a separate tinting licence, but it says all modifications must be installed by qualified personnel according to the vehicle and product manufacturer's recommendations, and tinted films must meet LTA's requirements. If you run tinting as a business, check ACRA's rules on registering a business.
What is the legal window tint limit in Singapore?
LTA says tinted film must let at least 70% of light through the front windscreen and the two front side windows, and at least 25% through the rear windscreen and the two rear side windows. Film must be non-reflective and the front windscreen must not affect ERP signal transmission.
Can I tint headlights or tail lights in Singapore?
No. LTA lists tinting or masking of vehicle lamps, such as headlamps, stop lamps and signal lamps, as a modification that is not allowed.
How can a customer check that their tint is legal?
LTA says vehicle owners can send their vehicle for testing at any LTA-Authorised Inspection Centre to make sure tinted films comply.
How long does window tint training take?
Tint Academy's in-person course is 2 days of hands-on training. The Singapore class runs December 5-6, 2026 at SQUAD Workshop, Enterprise Hub.
Is darker tint better for heat in Singapore?
Not necessarily. Heat rejection depends on the film's construction, not just how dark it looks, which is why film selection is part of professional training.
