Drive around Dallas–Fort Worth and you'll see it everywhere: purple, faded, bubbled window tint. Every one of those cars is a two-part job, removal first and new film second. Here's how professional installers remove old tint cleanly, why it's worth charging for, and where to learn it hands-on: our Dallas–Fort Worth window tint course on November 14 & 15, 2026 at Solar Spectrum Window Tinting in Keller, TX.
Why Old Tint Turns Purple and Bubbles
Many older and budget films get their shade from dyes. Years of strong sun break those dyes down, so the film fades toward purple, and failing adhesive lets bubbles form. The customer usually wants two things: the old film gone, and something better in its place. If you can do both properly, you've got a complete job instead of half of one.
How to Remove Old Window Tint Like a Pro
- Protect the interior first. Cover the rear deck, door panels and any electronics. Water, steam and adhesive remover shouldn't end up on upholstery or speakers.
- Soften the adhesive. Use heat or steam to warm the film and the glue underneath. Warm adhesive releases much more cleanly than cold.
- Peel slowly at a low angle. Lift a corner and pull steadily, keeping the film close to the glass. Go slowly enough that the adhesive comes off with the film instead of staying behind.
- Respect the defroster lines. On the inside of most rear windows, the defroster lines are printed on the glass. Never scrape them with a razor. Use heat or steam, patience and an adhesive remover.
- Get every bit of adhesive off. Any residue left on the glass will show under the new film. Remove it completely, then do a full clean before you install.
- Quote removal as its own line item. Removal takes real time, especially on a back window. Pricing it separately is fair to you and clear to the customer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does old window tint turn purple?
Many older or lower-cost films use dyes to create their shade. Over years of sun exposure those dyes break down, which is why aged tint often looks purple, faded or bubbled. Ceramic films are built differently and are designed to hold their colour.
How do professionals remove old window tint?
Soften the adhesive with heat or steam, then peel slowly at a low angle so the film and as much adhesive as possible come off together. Remove the leftover adhesive completely and clean the glass before installing new film.
Can you use a razor to remove tint from a rear window?
Not on the inside of most rear windows. The defroster lines are printed on the glass and a blade can cut them. Use heat or steam, a slow peel, and an adhesive remover instead.
Should tint removal be priced separately?
Yes. Removal takes real time, especially on a rear window. Quote it as its own line item so the customer understands what they're paying for, then quote the new film on top.
