Manitoba Window Tint Laws Every New Installer Should Know
"What is the legal tint in Winnipeg?" is one of the most common questions customers ask. In Manitoba, the rules are set out in section 3.22 of the Vehicle Equipment, Safety and Inspection Regulation (M.R. 31/2019) under The Highway Traffic Act:
- Front side windows (immediately left and right of the driver's seat): tint must not reduce light transmission below 50% or increase light reflection above 35%.
- Windshield: aftermarket tint is allowed only on the top 127 mm. A uniform shade band can't go below 25% light transmission. A graduated band can go to 5% in the top 64 mm and 25% in the rest of the band.
- Rear side and rear windows: a passenger car or multipurpose passenger vehicle can only have windows tinted below 50% if it has outside rear-view mirrors on both the driver and passenger sides.
- Tint meters: a window is deemed to comply when a proper test meter, used according to the manufacturer's instructions, reads at least 95% of the required minimum. On a 50% front side window, that's a reading of 47.5% or higher.
Remember that the light transmission rule applies to the glass and film together, and factory glass is already slightly tinted. Manitoba Public Insurance has also told inspection stations to measure tint with tint meters (MPI notice, December 2020). Owning a tint meter and checking front side windows before and after an install protects you and your customer. This is general information, not legal advice. Always check the current regulation. For other provinces, see window tint laws in Canada, province by province.
Watch: Light Transmission and Reflection in Plain Terms
Manitoba's rules are written around light transmission and reflection, and this short Tint Academy video explains both. It shows why reflective film gives privacy during the day when it's brighter outside, and why people can often see in at night once the lights are on inside. The example is flat glass, which you're introduced to on Day 2.
Staying Busy Through a Winnipeg Winter
A late-November class means you'll be practising your first installs as winter sets in. That's a good time to build skills, but you need a plan to keep bookings coming. In this webinar replay, Tint Academy covers winter marketing and social media ads, mobile tint and PPF work, residential and commercial flat glass film as an extra revenue stream, margins, and relationships with dealerships and local businesses.
Already run a detailing, ceramic coating, PPF, wrap or auto glass business? The business portion of the course covers how to add window tint to an existing automotive operation and approach dealerships.
Certification vs. Licence
Tint Academy certification shows that you completed hands-on training. It is not a government licence.
