Indiana Window Tint Laws Every Installer Should Know

Knowing the law protects you and your customers. Under Indiana Code 9-19-19-4, tint on the windshield, side wings, front side windows and rear window must:

• Allow at least 30% visible light transmission (VLT)
• Have no more than 25% visible light reflectance
• On the windshield, be applied only above the AS-1 line

Indiana allows a medical exemption when a physician or optometrist certifies the need. The certificate must be renewed every year and kept in the vehicle. Under IC 9-19-19-8, an installer who applies tint that doesn't meet these rules commits a Class A infraction, so meter your work and check the current statute or the Indiana state FAQ before every job. This is general information, not legal advice.
