Starting a Window Tint Business in Edmonton: Licence Basics

Many students in Edmonton take the class to start tinting on their own, add tint to a detailing shop, or work from a garage. The rules below come from the City of Edmonton's own pages. This is general information, not legal advice, and you should confirm your situation with the City before you start.

You will likely need a City business licence

The City says a business must have a licence under its Business Licence Bylaw 20002, and that home-based businesses need one "like any other business in the city" (City of Edmonton: Home-based Business). The City decides which licence categories apply based on the activities you describe on your application, and more than one category can apply.

Which category fits tinting?

The City's business licence categories page defines "Vehicle Repair, Maintenance, and Modification" as a business that repairs, maintains, cleans, modifies or customizes vehicles, and its keyword list includes vehicle customization, car detailing and after-market accessories. Window tint isn't named outright, so describe exactly what you do when you apply and let the City assign the category. You can reach the City's business licence team at 311 in Edmonton or 780-442-5311.

Working from a home or garage

The City's home-based business page says a business with customers visiting the home, or other non-residential activity, needs a development permit. It also lists limits that can apply, including a maximum of 60 square metres for an accessory building such as a garage or shed, no more than 2 on-site employees who don't live in the home, and a rule that business vehicles of 4,600 kg GVWR or less can't be parked on site longer than needed to load or unload. It also says no outdoor business activity is allowed. Read the full page and check your zoning before you set up a tint bay at home.

Mobile tinting at customers' locations

The City's definition of "Traveling or Temporary Sales" includes selling goods or services to consumers at a consumer's place of residence. If you plan to tint at customers' homes or workplaces, ask the City during your application whether an additional category applies to your plan.

Tint Academy certification shows that you completed hands-on training. It is not a government licence. Learn the difference in Window Tint Certification Explained, and follow the full roadmap in How to Become a Certified Window Tinter.

Build Your Starter Toolkit

Your tuition includes a professional tool kit, but it helps to understand what each tool does before class. In this Tint Academy video, the instructor walks through the essential window tint tools every beginner should own, how each one is used during installation, which are worth buying first and the mistakes new tinters make.

Common Beginner Questions

Not sure the course is right for you? This short video answers five questions beginners ask most: how long it takes to learn window tinting, whether you need experience, how much you can make, hand cutting versus a plotter, and which tools you need to start. It also explains the difference between watching tutorials online and getting hands-on training.

Already run a detailing, PPF or wrap business? The course also covers adding tint to your existing services. Curious about PPF? Start with the window tint and PPF certification guide.
